Sallie K. Smith

"Every summer our family traveled from my childhood Ohio home to the West. We visited Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming spending our two week vacations camping, hiking, horseback riding and rock hounding. My mom painted. I fell in love with the Rockies and its mountains, rivers and big sky. When the family wagon headed back east across the Great Plains my little nose was plastered to the back window as the mountains slowly faded from view. I was never ready to leave.

We moved to Colorado in the late sixties but I feel the same way today when it comes time to leave the mountains and head back home. I want to stay longer… be closer to the beautiful places and magnificent animals we encounter as we hike and travel the Rocky Mountain west.

When I started painting I realized that it allows me to linger. As an artist I develop an intimate relationship with the subjects I paint. I have a need to look deeply into them and will spend hours, or days, or weeks transferring what I have observed onto a canvas. We become close.

I did not make a serious attempt to become a professional painter until I was nearly 50. I just didn’t feel I was ready to paint until then. I have been drawing ever since I can remember and the smell of oil paint and turpentine are among my earliest memories. My artist mom encouraged me to look at things differently. An often asked question was, “What colors do you see?” It is not surprising then that my paintings use color to communicate energy, light, and beauty. I use rich color without apology…it is what I see and working with it gives me great pleasure.

I believe my ability to produce art is a wonderful gift, the process a special way to experience life, and sharing it with others a privilege."
