Virginia Howlett

Canadian-born artist Virginia Howlett holds a BFA from Ohio State University and an MFA in Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an Assistant Professor at Hampton University in Virginia where she won a Mellon Foundation grant for painting in Oaxaca, Mexico. She was also an Assistant Professor of Painting at New Mexico Highlands University, near Santa Fe.

Virginia moved to Seattle 20 years ago and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest landscape. She creates her work at an island cabin in British Columbia, in the Sonoran desert of Arizona, and at her Ballard neighborhood studio. Her exhibitions include shows in Seattle, Chicago, New Mexico, Virginia, and Ohio.

"My work infuses the tradition of North American landscape painting with a modern sense of abstraction. Intrigued by the ephemeral beauty of nature, I see elements of landscape (sea, sky, plains) as abstract fields of color. By grouping these color fields, I create meditative glimpses of memory in patterns that recall landscapes."
