Sarah Atkinson was born in High Point, North Carolina in 1980. Her family owned farmland in a small rural town. Influenced by the beauty of her surroundings, she developed a love for the arts very early on. She began her studies in drawing and watercolors with her father, also an artist. Much of her childhood was spent in his studio painting at his side. From here she went to study Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. In this time she developed a deep interest in figurative works and began cultivating her contextual style of painting.
Sarah's fascination in the shape, structure and movement of the figure continues to be central to her work. Over the years her painting approach has moved from a traditional form of painting to a semi abstract style. Experimentation with various mediums and unconventional materials refined her work. Whether a classic figurative piece or an abstract landscape, Sarah's ability to capture timeless movement in her paintings is offset against an organic, rich, and complex background. Amidst a sea of tar and beeswax, the pieces, in their final state stand as elegant, yet bittersweet works.
Sarah now resides in Charlotte NC with her family. She has had many group and solo exhibitions and her works are held in private collections throughout the United States, as well as internationally.
