A resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kirk Tatom is a sculptor in stone who dabbled in landscape painting some years ago but made a living as a sculptor. In the late 1990s, he resumed landscape painting, and got an excellent response to rural landscape with animals such as cattle.
He grew up in New Mexico but spends much time in Michigan where his in-laws live on a dairy farm and where he finds subject matter for his painting. He loves places where "things are growing."
He and his father make the frames for his paintings including the milling and gold leafing.
