Darrell Dean was born (April 1 1958) in Nashville Tennessee where his father was trying to get on the Opry back in Appalachian growing up poor and weird one of his first memories of art was making op art painted bottles with his grandmother (no not the melungeon one) to sell to rich tourist traveling thru but then the interstate opened and they didn't stop anymore and finally bouncing around thru Florida ending up on the mean streets of Washington DC he studied "real art" at George Washington University from underneath the railroad tracks of Capital Hill to the posh gardens of Georgetown thru Act Up and Jesse Helms he survived and prospered as an antique dealer for 30 years with shops in Washington DC and New York City finally arriving in Winston Salem NC and returned to making art cubism dada punk pop graffiti naive science expressionism typography (think Ray Gun magazine) and folk art all mixed together and handsomely regurgitated in these portraits of and ongoing series in pursuit of my psyche and everything I've learned
Darrell joined Grand Image in 2024.
