Artwork for Kenneth Showell

Kenneth Showell (1939-1997) was an American painter best known for his work in the mid-1960s to early 1970s. He produced nearly 200 canvases, alongside watercolors, pastels, and sketches. He was a part of the Lyrical Abstraction movement, which moved towards more lyrical, romantic, and vibrant abstractions. His work was known for its spontaneity, sensuousness, and opticality. Showell started with spray painting canvases to create large scale works that looked wrinkled when flat. Later, he explored alternative strategies and motifs in his abstract works in the late '70s to early '80s. Showell established a parallel career as a photographer, where he became interested in the representation of what was before him and began to infuse his conceptual basis into his investigation of nature and landscapes.
Kenneth joined Grand Image in 2021.
