Artwork for Ryan Garvey

Inspired by the deluge of media, visual patterns, and detritus that emerges from daily city life, Ryan Garvey's work captures the fast-paced intensity of the urban experience with a sense of bursting mania. Created with found materials, the formal elements are informed by the artifacts accrued. They are processed and synthesized to construct a physical network that questions the distinction between medium and subject matter.

"As I spend time in a space that interests me patterns emerge, and these patterns are the evidence of human interactions," Garvey explains. "The finished pieces are composed entirely of their own subject matter. In a way I see them as serving the same function as a geologist's soil samples."

Ryan Garvey was born in 1981 and grew up in Massachusetts. He became fascinated with drawing at a young age and his exploration of art has never ceased. As a child Ryan developed a passion for collecting and would spend hours acquiring, cataloguing, and displaying his various hoards; rituals which continue to influence his work today. Ryan attended the Massachusetts College of Art where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in printmaking in 2006. He currently lives and works in New York; his work has been exhibited in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Ryan joined Grand Image in 2016.
