Artwork for Jean-Alexander Frater

Chicago-based artist Jean Alexander Frater studied philosophy before moving into art, and her creations are a product of her philosophical musings. Her black and white paintings explore mechanics of perception and the presentation of art.

"I contemplate perception, how meaning is determined or shifted; and how the architecture of our physicality performs, records and digests our visual world."

Frater's work blends drawing and painting and plays with simple forms to create geometric or swirling abstractions intended to challenge the notion of how art should be viewed. Some paintings have no "top" or "bottom" and can be hung from any side - or from a corner as a diamond.

Jean Alexander Frater earned a MFA at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited nationally as well internationally in Canada, Israel, Italy, and Sweden.

Jean-Alexander joined Grand Image in 2014.
