Pacific Plaza Project, Tacoma WA
The Challenge As one of the Northwest’s leading architecture and design firms, our client was looking for artwork for several areas in the newly renovated Pacific Plaza building. The Pacific Plaza building is a prime office and retail facility in a beautifully refurbished section of downtown Tacoma, WA. Grand Image’s challenge was to supply original artwork for the lobby with these specifications: The artwork had to be representative of the city of Tacoma and its history; and tie the building’s past to its future. Additionally, our client wanted to produce oversized prints that would be seen from the window of the adjacent Attorney General’s office.
The Solution The Grand Image Creative Team proposed a commission by one of our core artists, Patrick Atkinson. The artist created original collage paintings on board incorporating historic images of the neighborhood provided by the client. The paintings were created using Patrick’s signature encausic; a painting technique that uses oil paints which are mixed with beeswax, and tar.
For the oversized prints, our client took advantage of our Contract Printing services. Grand Image worked with the client’s chosen photographer. Our GI ArtLab used the photographer’s files to digitally manipulate, color proof, and prepress images suitable for oversized printing in our printing facility. The original paintings commissioned for the lobby successfully conveyed the story of the transformation of the building and the past and future of the city of Tacoma. Our exceptional strategic partnerships also allowed us to offer competitive pricing on framing and installation services for a complete package.
